Providing Confidential and Effective Psychotherapy
Meet Niamh, a Specialist in psychoanalytic psychotherapy
Niamh Duffy, BA. Psych., MSc. Clinical Psych, Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist in Dundalk, Louth and Published Author.
Are you feeling stuck, or noticing the same patterns repeating in your life whether in relationships, work, or even within yourself? You may already understand a lot about yourself, yet something doesn’t change, and other approaches haven’t quite reached what matters to you.
I’m Niamh Duffy, an accredited psychoanalytic psychotherapist based in Dundalk, Co. Louth with over six years’ clinical experience working with adults and young people. I offer in-person and online psychoanalytic psychotherapy. My clinical work has increasingly centred on recurring patterns in relationships and how experiences may come to be carried in the body. I work with individuals who find themselves returning to similar situations, even when they are trying to do things differently. You can take a look at my blog on why we keep doing things that don’t truly satisfy us.
Many people come to therapy feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, low mood, or a sense of unease. Others may be navigating challenges in their relationships with partners, family, or friends, or exploring aspects of their identity and sexuality. While we may notice symptoms like low mood or chronic worry, my work focuses on what lies beneath, the patterns, the habits, and emotional currents that shape your experience.
My work addresses the underlying, often unspoken aspects of the human condition, the patterns, the repetitions, and the ways we can get in our own way, ultimately, these shape how we think, feel, and act. Over time, patterns that once felt fixed may begin to loosen. This can open up a different way of relating to yourself and to others, allowing you to feel more at ease and less constrained by familiar difficulties. People often describe feeling less weighed down by old patterns and more open to new possibilities.About my Practice & How I Work
What is Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy?
Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is based on the principles underlying psychoanalytic theory and practice. Psychoanalytic work privileges the unconscious — the hidden force that shapes who we are and what we do. By providing a space where the unconscious can be listened to, therapy helps you notice what governs your thoughts, feelings, and actions, often without your awareness.
Psychoanalytically, the unconscious is expressed through language, which is why it is through speaking that the work unfolds. This highly specialised, depth-oriented process is uniquely tailored to you, rooted in your singular experience, and allows for a reflective exploration of patterns, repetitions, and the ways you hold themself back.
As with trees, it's often not the branches we must examine first, but the roots, to understand why things grow the way they do.
Curious About Taking the Next Step?
If you’re curious about stepping into this reflective work, it can help to understand how psychoanalytic therapy in Dundalk unfolds. It is a deep, reflective process, and while it requires commitment, it offers valuable insights and lasting change that can help you move beyond old patterns. What’s key is that it doesn’t require constant “digging” into your past. Rather than trying to uncover everything at once, the work focuses on what emerges naturally, as my approach is rooted in respect for each person’s pace and readiness. You can find practical details about session length, frequency, and fees on my FAQ page, to help you take the first step.
