Niamh Duffy, BA. Psych., MSc. Clinical Psych

Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist

  • As a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist, I specialise in psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. I work with a wide variety of people, including people with anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties among other issues and symptoms. My psychotherapy practice is based in two locations: Dublin City Centre and Dundalk, Co. Louth.

I began my private practice over 5 years ago, having worked clinically with individuals for more than 5 years. My studies have spanned across several disciplines, including psychology, psychotherapy, and psychoanalysis, providing me with a broad and well-rounded foundation for my clinical work. As part of my training, I attended weekly case conferences at St Vincent’s University Hospital, where psychiatric and psychoanalytic perspectives on mental illness came together. This enriching experience has significantly shaped my clinical understanding of a wide range of mental health challenges, providing a nuanced approach to the complexities of the mind.

With over a decade of academic study and continuous engagement in the field, I am actively involved in the field of psychoanalysis, presenting at professional conferences and study days. My work has been published in the Irish Journal for Lacanian Psychoanalysis, reflecting my commitment to advancing both clinical practice and psychoanalytic scholarship.Through these conferences it ensures I stay connected with the latest developments in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis.

My commitment to and engagement in my own personal analysis deeply informs and enriches my work in the clinic.

These commitments ensure that my work remains adaptive, and attuned to the complexities of the mind.

  • Along with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree in Psychology, I have completed an MSc in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy with the UCD School of Medicine and Specific Modality Training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy with the School of Psychotherapy at St. Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin. I remain actively engaged in the field of psychoanalysis; presenting at various conferences.

In my therapeutic work, I work within the code of ethics set out by the Association for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy in Ireland (APPI). I am a fully accredited member of APPI, a registered member of the Irish Council for Psychotherapy (ICP), a member of the Psychological Society of Ireland and a member of the Irish School for Lacanian Psychoanalysis.

  • My work has been published in the Irish Journal for Lacanian Psychoanalysis, reflecting my commitment to advancing both clinical practice and psychoanalytic scholarship.

“I enjoy working with individuals who are curious, motivated to change and no longer wish to suffer their symptom.”

Making the first appointment can feel daunting. After you contact me, we arrange an initial consultation where you can speak freely about what brings you to therapy. This is also a chance for you to ask questions and get a sense of how I work. If it feels right, we then agree on a regular time each week to begin your sessions. Consistency is key, this steady rhythm creates the space for deep, transformative work. Starting therapy is the beginning of an important commitment to yourself.

What Happens After You Reach Out

How the Work Unfolds

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is a process that develops over time. Each session is an opportunity to speak openly, to discover what lies beneath repeating patterns, and to engage with what has been left unsaid. This commitment to regular sessions allows for the work to take root and can bring about lasting change, rather than temporary relief.

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy doesn’t just aim to manage symptoms, it invites a radical movement in how you relate to yourself and others. This work helps you move through life differently, discovering new ways of relating to yourself and others, and enabling you to engage with life in ways that once felt impossible.

Find a new way of engaging with life

  • Psychoanalysis is a depth-oriented form of psychotherapy that does not stop at managing symptoms. Instead, it asks what those symptoms may be trying to express. Many people come to analysis feeling stuck in repeating patterns, in relationships, in work, or within themselves. In this work, you are invited to speak freely, allowing what you don’t yet know you know to emerge.

This process creates the possibility of a radical shift in how you relate to yourself and others. Rather than offering quick solutions, psychoanalysis opens up new ways of living and engaging with life that once felt impossible. It is a rigorous, transformative process — one that requires commitment, but in doing so, allows for lasting and meaningful change. Starting your therapy journey is the beginning of an important commitment to yourself and an investment in yourself is always a worthwhile one.

  • Many therapies focus on managing symptoms or changing behaviours. Psychoanalytic psychotherapy goes further, it asks why certain feelings or patterns keep repeating and gives space to uncover the underlying roots of these difficulties. This depth is what allows for more meaningful, lasting transformation.

  • Yes. Confidentiality is central to the therapeutic space. It ensures that you have the freedom to speak openly and honestly, knowing that what you share will be treated with respect and privacy.
